Geiger -Muller counter or GM counter is the most widely used and reliable radioactivity detector. On the reaction of Gas atoms with incident charged particles primary and secondary ions are produced along with photoelectrons due to excitation of gas atoms which results in Townsend avalanche in presence of a high potential difference resulting in voltage drop across resistance and giving a pulse.
